A tax preparation company that is still here in August
Tax preparation services in Charlotte range from seasonal storefronts to software to full accounting firms, and the difference only shows when something goes wrong. Latorre & Company is a year-round tax and accounting firm in Matthews, about fifteen minutes from uptown Charlotte. Every return is prepared by our own staff, reviewed by a second person before you sign, and supported after it is filed: if the IRS or the North Carolina Department of Revenue writes to you about a return we prepared, you bring the letter to us and we answer it.
Our team includes enrolled agents admitted to practice before the IRS. Enrolled agent is the federal credential for tax professionals, issued by the IRS itself, and it allows them to represent you before the IRS on any tax matter. That matters most on the day a return is questioned, and it is why our Tax Pitbull tax resolution division works in the same office as the people who prepare your return.
Personal and business tax returns
Most of our clients need one or both of these. Many business owners have us prepare the company return and their family’s return together, so the two are built by people who can see both sets of numbers.
Personal Tax Preparation
W-2 employees, the self-employed, ITIN holders, landlords and families with income in more than one state.

Business returns ›What our tax preparation service includes
- Federal and North Carolina returns. Prepared, reviewed and e-filed, with confirmation when each one is accepted.
- Other states. Part-year and nonresident returns for anyone who moved or earned income outside North Carolina.
- Prior-year and amended returns. Years that were never filed, and corrections to returns someone else prepared.
- ITIN applications and renewals. Form W-7 prepared with the return it has to be attached to.
- Extensions. Filed on time when a K-1 or a document is late, so the return can be done right in the fall.
- Next year, planned. Withholding and estimated payments adjusted so April does not bring a surprise.
How to choose a tax preparer
Our resolution team spends much of its year cleaning up returns that other preparers filed, so we see the same warning signs again and again. The IRS publishes its own list, and these are the ones we would add our voice to:
- The fee is a percentage of your refund. That pays the preparer to make the refund bigger, not correct.
- The preparer will not sign the return. Every paid preparer must sign and enter their PTIN. A return without one is a return nobody will stand behind.
- The refund is promised before the documents are seen. Nobody can know your refund without your forms.
- The refund goes to the preparer’s account. Your refund should be deposited to your account, never theirs.
- The office is gone after April. Notices arrive months later. Ask who will answer them.
If a past return has already turned into a balance or a stack of letters, our unfiled and past-due returns page explains what happens next.
In English or Spanish, in person or by video
Every client-facing role at the firm works in both languages, so nothing is translated on the way to your return. You can sit down with your preparer at our office in Matthews, near Charlotte, or upload documents through our secure portal and review the return by video. We prepare returns for families and business owners across Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Union County, and the fee is quoted before we start, based on your documents.
Tax preparation questions
It depends on the forms in the return, not on the size of the refund. A single W-2 return costs less than one with a business, rental properties or income in several states. We look at your documents and quote the fee before any work starts, and it does not change unless the return does.
Not always. Anyone paid to prepare returns needs an IRS preparer number, but credentials vary. Enrolled agents are licensed by the IRS and can represent you on any tax matter, while a preparer with no credential can represent you only in limited situations. Our firm includes enrolled agents and also keeps books and runs payroll, so the return is prepared by people who understand the accounting behind it.
Yes. We prepare individual returns for employees, the self-employed, ITIN holders and landlords, and business returns for sole proprietors, LLCs, partnerships and corporations. Owners often have both prepared here so the two returns agree.
Yes. Every client-facing role at the firm works in English and Spanish, from the front desk to the person who explains your return before you sign it.
From January through April an appointment is strongly recommended, because that is when the office is busiest. Outside tax season you can usually walk in. Video appointments are available all year.
Yes. We prepare prior-year returns regularly. If the IRS has already assessed a balance or sent notices, our Tax Pitbull division handles the returns and the balance together, starting with a free consultation.
